Complex trauma refers to patterns of emotional, psychological, and relational difficulties that can develop after prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic experiences, often within interpersonal relationships and sometimes beginning earlier in life. While Complex Trauma is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR, clinicians commonly use the term to describe the broader impact of chronic trauma on emotional regulation, identity, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety. It is sometimes referred to as developmental trauma when these patterns emerge from repeated early-life experiences of instability, neglect, or relational harm.
